Robots the future of the produce industry?

ROYAL CITY -- Here on the verdant Royal Slope, cutting-edge technology is rolling through an apple orchard. As engineers and horticulturists watch, six pairs of cameras on a white steel bar move down a track snapping three-dimensional photos. The photos, along with data on the size and number of apples, are transmitted to a nearby computer for further analysis.

Similar demonstrations of this robotic scout in six sites throughout Central Washington last week provided a peek at new technology in the tree fruit industry. When fully developed, the scout will roam an entire orchard on its own, collecting data to help growers better manage their orchards, said Tim McConnell, senior technical staff and project manager for Vision Robotics.

But at least as important, it could be the foundation for other technologies, such as a mechanized thinning or harvesting device, he said.

Harold Thinks! Just because I can still remember when my Dad brought home the first family TV doesn’t mean I can’t get excited by new technology. Yes the picture was black and white! I am sure some of my readership can’t comprehend a black and white television. What we consider today to be old and outdated was at one time state of the art. The point being that we should always be looking to the future and what we can do to improve ourselves, our companies and the industry. We are in a world market now and the only way we are going to be able to compete in the future is by developing and utilizes the latest technology.

Osama bin Laden versus Brittany Spears

Harold Thinks! I am news addict. The first step to over come this addiction is to admit I have one. I do have help in overcoming this problem from an unlikely source. The news media itself is helping me overcome my need for a news fix. The poor job that is being done providing us honest information so we can form intelligent opinions is almost criminal.

I did a quick search of Yahoo and got back 4,462 articles on Osama bin laden. I entered Brittany Spears name and the search results returned 8,648 articles. That should be an indication of our poor state of real news. Last week for the first time there was some positive news from Iraq that was covered by the news media for one day. CBS even provide an almost positive story on the war at this link.

I am not the only one disappointed in the news media. Al-Qaida attacked the Al Jazeera television over their airing of the Osama bin Laden’s latest video. Apparently they didn’t approve of the way it was handled. Read the story at the following link.

Whether you’re a supporter of the war are or against it is not the issue I am discussing here. The issue is about the News media today and their poor performance when they are reporting the news. I still have a lot of confidence in our industry news sources as they continue to report using reputable methods of reporting. The mainstream media is the one that concerns me.
